Several celebrations take place in early May: the Festivity of the Holy Cross Exaltation with Altars in the old city centre streets, the Commemoration of Velez Malaga conquest by the Royal Monarchs in the Cruz del Cordero  historical neighbourhood and the Cross procession in the same neighbourhood . Awards are given for the best made Cross
