El Pósito (Public Granary)

Vélez-Málaga

El Pósito (public granary) is a municipal warehouse to store grain for supply to the cities; in addition, it was loaned to farmers at affordable rates during hard times when hunger and scarcity were imminent. In 1581 the legal function of these buildings was normalized. In 1751 a government agency was created to regulate and control their function.

Our public granary was built in the middle of the XVIII century. The building has a two level rectangular floor. The first level looks like a market with a series of columns with semicircular arches on which rest the vaults that form the structure. The upper floor is a similar structure of arches and large columns which was used mostly as a wheat granary. The façade of baroque influence is divided into sections with adjoining semi-columns and a central balcony flanked by two medallions.

Its original function stopped with the passing of time, and in 1899 it was sold to a company and was turned into commercial premises and homes. At the beginning of this century the building was acquired by the Town Hall which turned it into a Cultural facility.
