The citadel or fortress

Vélez-Málaga

It is located at the City highest point, about 80 metres above sea level; this Medieval Citadel was built in the X century and played its greatest leading role during the XIV and XV centuries as it became one of the most important citadels in the Nazar Kingdom

Its location is a decisive factor since it visually controls the Velez plain and large Axarquia areas, and its easy natural defence, which is reinforced by about 1,500 square metre walled compound that fits into a terrain that was strengthened by small solid blocks. The original walls that remain are from the XIII and XV centuries and are built of compressed mud, lime and sand, coated with masonry and aligning rows of bricks. It was restored during the French invasion, between 1808 and 1810; subsequently it stopped having a military use which caused its total abandonment and therefore its decay.

Its tower and access door were built in the early 1970 decade.

Location: It can be accessed from the Polideportivo Fernando Hierro road, Arenas road.

Opening hours: The enclosure is open every day. The keep of the fortress can be visited Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 2pm.
