The most relevant event in this district is the Live Nativity performance that is declared an event of Tourist Interest in the Province.
At Christmas the neighbours perform a live Nativity scene which is held every end of December at the Juan Paniagua Public School in Almayate.
Whole families, companies, clubs and other groups unite to stage the Birth of Jesus. None of the actors are professionals. The Priest is the coordinator and director of the Performance.
There are 12 scenes from the Annunciation to the escape to Egypt.
Almayate Live Nativity Scene offers visitors an amazing mix of the old with the new. Popular Nativity traditions recovered from the deepest Almayate roots through theatrical and musical culture, are all enhanced with the latest in audiovisual technology and the excitement of a whole town.
This is a trip 2000 years back in time that already has been enjoyed by thousands of spectators from different generations. More than 200 people take part in the performance that every Christmas transmits the excitement of a whole town: it involves 150 characters wearing period costume, technicians, and support people, dozens of animals and spectacular scenes of more than 2,700 m2 outdoors.
In this way a show full of magic, music and colour is presented, bringing together more than 200 people among children, young and adults, all of them full of excitement. As of today it has been enjoyed by more than 8,000 spectators from different generations.
Every year it aims to enhance culture while rescuing popular and unique traditions of the Axarquia Region, from Amayate, Velez Malaga Municipality in particular.
In just over two hours of performance, the spectator relives the days from the Annunciation of Archangel Saint Gabriel until the escape of Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus to Egypt.
In 2014 will be on Friday the 26th and Saturday 27th at 6pm.
