Vélez Málaga is the capital of Axarquia with 74,000 inhabitants. This population lives in 11 different areas which are mostly located along the coast making the N-340 National road the main spine of the municipality. The localities are:
Seven of the mentioned populated areas are located along the coast (from west to east: Chilches, Benajarafe, Almayate, Torre del Mar, Caleta de Vélez, Mezquitilla and Lagos).
Four are located in-land (Cajiz, Trapiche, Triana and Vélez Málaga).
Almayate is located between Torre del Mar and Benajarafe just a few metres from the coast and the N-340 National Road.
A coastal district whose origin was an old Medieval farmstead in Vélez territory; in fact, its name is Arabic in origin.
Small populated area located in the inner part of the Western municipal boundary, north of Almayate and motorway A-7.
Caleta de Vélez se sitúa sobre la N-340, en dirección hacia Almería desde Torre del Mar, entre las desembocaduras de los ríos Seco y Algarrobo.
A locality which is next to Rincon de la Victoria boundaries, towards Malaga and close to the N-340 National Road
Together with Mezquitilla is located outside the geographical group of Velez Malaga between Algarrobo and Torrox municipalities.
Coastal Locality
With the best sea promenade in Europe, it is one of the main tourist destinations in Malaga province at the moment.
A mostly agricultural populated area on the northern municipal boundary of Velez Malaga. Trapiche is next to the Arco road which links Velez Malaga with the A-45 motorway (Malaga-Antequera).
Triana is located next to the road that links the C-335 road (Arco road) with Benamargosa.
